In a groundbreaking moment for Indian cinema, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol witnessed the unveiling of their bronze statue at London’s iconic Leicester Square, commemorating 30 years of the timeless classic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ). This historic honor marks the first time an Indian film has been immortalized with a statue at the prestigious location, joining legendary characters from Harry Potter, Mary Poppins, Batman, and Wonder Woman.
The bronze statue depicts Raj and Simran in their most iconic pose from Aditya Chopra’s masterpiece, capturing a moment that has resonated with South Asian audiences worldwide for three decades. This tribute celebrates DDLJ’s unprecedented impact on global pop culture and its status as the longest-running Hindi film in cinema history.
Shah Rukh Khan’s emotional reaction to the statue unveiling revealed his genuine surprise at the film’s enduring legacy. “To be honest, I had no idea DDLJ would become this phenomenon! I’m very fortunate to have been part of cinema like this and very grateful,” the Bollywood superstar shared during the ceremony.
The King Khan further reflected on the unexpected journey of the film’s success: “I think none of us had any idea DDLJ would become this in people’s hearts. I am sure Adi (Aditya Chopra) and all felt it would be a good film and everybody would like it, but I don’t think anyone would have ever imagined what it became and what it stands for.”
The significance of Leicester Square as the location couldn’t be more perfect, as Shah Rukh Khan explained the deep connection between the UK and their stardom. “It’s very personal for both of us and for the Indian Film industry! The UK, London, is quite responsible for our stardom in a way because we were doing well in our country, like other actors, but I think we started doing a lot better overseas.”
He fondly recalled the filming experience: “It started off as a set of youngsters making DDLJ, Aditya Chopra, Karan Johar were ADs then. It was a fun trip of 30-40 days, and we made it very fast, especially in Switzerland and England. Quite a free-wheeling shooting, handheld, especially here in Leicester Square, we didn’t even tell anyone we did a quick scene and got away with it.”
Kajol’s perspective on DDLJ’s global phenomenon highlighted the film’s unprecedented achievement. “It’s been 30 years, and we are happy to say it’s the longest running film not only in India but in the world, and it’s actually gone into the Guinness Book of World Records, so super kicked to be a part of it.”
The actress emphasized how the film became an unexpected cultural touchstone: “I don’t think we planned for DDLJ to become a global phenomenon for Indians and South Asians. I think somewhere down the line, DDLJ has become kind of a touchstone for Indians living abroad.”
The statue’s emotional impact on the diaspora community was particularly close to Kajol’s heart. “I think for all Indians who stay in the UK or come here, it might become a moment to go see the statue, to recognize their nostalgia for the film. There is also a familiarity and there is also a massive pull towards it. So, I’m hoping that everyone feels that touch of home when they see us here in Leicester Square.”
The location holds special significance as Leicester Square featured prominently in DDLJ, showcasing the scene where Raj and Simran first cross paths unknowingly before their European adventure. The square’s Vue cinema and Odeon Leicester Square are visible in the original film, making this tribute even more meaningful.
DDLJ’s cultural impact extends far beyond Bollywood, with even former US President Obama referencing the film during an official visit to India. The story of Raj and Simran, two non-resident Indians who fall in love during their journey across Europe and India beginning from King’s Cross station, continues to resonate with audiences globally.
Since its 1995 release, DDLJ has maintained its record-breaking cinema run in India, proving its timeless appeal. The film’s legacy in the UK has been further cemented with the recent stage adaptation, “Come Fall In Love – The DDLJ Musical,” which successfully ran in Manchester earlier this year.
The 30th anniversary celebrations mark a significant milestone for Yash Raj Films and Indian cinema as a whole. This bronze statue serves as a permanent reminder of how Indian storytelling has touched hearts across continents, creating lasting connections with diaspora communities worldwide.
The unveiling ceremony represents more than just a tribute to a successful film; it symbolizes the global recognition of Indian cinema’s cultural influence. For Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, this moment validates their contribution to a story that has defined romance for generations of moviegoers.
As visitors to Leicester Square can now witness this historic tribute, the DDLJ bronze statue stands as a testament to the power of cinema in bridging cultures and creating shared memories across borders. The legacy of Raj and Simran continues to inspire new generations, proving that some love stories truly are eternal.
